Before, looking straight down at fan.

I'm pretty sure it was my fan clutch that failed, because the fan spun freely after I got the engine good and hot. (This is with the engine off, I should point out.) It should offer more resistance when it is hot, so that the fan spins faster. Newer cars use electric fans, which are pretty much across the board better, but in old cars the fan is belt-driven.

The fan clutch is the aluminum colored piece barely visible inside the fan. Probably I didn't need to replace all that other stuff, but it was better to replace it all than not replace enough.
